Theme "Lighting and the Residential Environment in the 21st Century" Head Juror Kenji Ekuan (Industrial Designer) Connecting the people of the world through lighting design requires a way of thinking that is truly global. I think that this year's judging results highlights the point that this perspective is not just the notion of a privileged part of thepopulation. Looking back on the 18 years of the competition, I think it is worth remarking on how opportunities have arisen for the jurors to discuss the themes. |
By giving the competition a theme,
students can follow single guiding design guideline. Themes are put forward to
enable the student to transform a design that deals with light into a good design
through the process of participating in the competition. The theme itself is a
product of the design movement. I felt that this year's competition has once again
allowed the competition to evolve. Kiyonori Kikutake ( Architect) I think Lighting of the Global Age” was a good theme. It provided students with an opportunity to tackle global environmental issues. However my overall impression of this year's competition was that compared with other concepts we have had up until now, the designs were unperfected. Having to judge unperfected works was very difficult. When I was judging, I added conditions such as if this were added to the design, it would be good." The level of content to be added is quite high. It is also important to note that beautiful form alone is not enough to receive a Gold Award. |
