It is a precious opportunity for a student to be able to propose ideas through lighting in relation to problems shared throughout the world. We have witnessed a wide range of ways in which students have addressed the theme of Lighting of the Global Age ranging from a societal level through to spiritual and physical healing. The theme implies something global, yet something psychological and we were looking for both of these extremes. I think the submissions consequently had a wide range of approaches to this theme. I think that this year's award recipients are representative of this broad spectrum. It was disappointing, though, that although recycling was one of the themes, we were unable to find any works that adequately addressed it.
Patrick Whitney(Designer)
I was actually surprised how many of this year's entries did not stick to the theme. For some of
this year's work, I felt they could have been submitted in last year's competition. I say we place a stronger comment in the application guidelines for next year's competition that students must focus on the theme.
I believe this competition is a valuable opportunity for students, especially for students who receive a top-level award.

Angelo Cortesi (Industrial Designer)
On reflection of this year's judging process, I think there were many designs that were humorous with a playful sentiment. There were works with a technological slant, and there were works that delivered a social function. I think the lighting designs the evoked thoughts of origami paper were expressing Eastern ideas. The most interesting characteristic of the works of the 18th competition was the variation between them, although many were unperfected.
